WEBSITE SPECIAL GUESTS

For many years on the site, special guest artists have been invited to exhibit works on the site which either express or in some way interpret the summer theme. Guest artists have included painters, photographers, and others whose works have been displayed on the concert pages and other pages in the site. Scroll down the page to learn more about some of the images of works which appear on this summer's site.

FAIRPLEX GARDEN RAILROAD

The theme and main page images on the site this year come from the small model railroad world of the Fairplex Garden Railroad in Pomona.

What is the Fairplex Garden Railroad? A much longer history and description can be found on the railroad's website at www.fgrr.org, but here is a brief bit of information from the "About" page on that site. The model railroad "world" was first established in 1924 but moved to its current location in 1935. Though there have been changes over the years, today the system has over 10,000 feet of track and over thirty sections with a variety of equipment and trains operating at any time. The various trains and trolleys pass several miniature scenes depicting California history from the 1850s to today. The trains also wander through mountains, over lakes and streams and through the gardens. The railroad has operated for each of the LA County Fairs since 1935, with the exception of the years during World War II. Volunteers maintain the Garden Railroad throughout the year and operate the trains for several shows in addition to the open hours during the fair.

Be sure to check out the railroad at next year's LA County Fair, since 2024 will bring the Garden Railroad's 100th Anniversary!

FLEURS DE VILLES

A WORLD OF FLOWERS! In the 2023 summer theme description on the site's "News" pages, a small miniature scene from the Garden Railroad with a figure of Disney's Goofy waving "hello" was shown. Reminiscent of the words from another "Small World," it was also said that the 2023 theme would be used to look not only at things large and small, but also at things which can be universal in nature (like music) and can make our world a small - or smaller - one, after all.

Beautiful flowers are appreciated throughout the world. An organization called "Fleurs de Villes" - meaning "flowers of the cities" - brings beautiful, original displays of flowers to cities throughout Canada, the United States, Australia and beyond. In each city the artistic floral displays are organized, Fleurs de Villes says they work "with top local florists, designers, growers and nurseries to showcase the city's world-class talent and create stunning displays of art." These local florists use mannequins as a base for floral installations created around a particular theme. Photos on this summer's "Concerts by Date" county pages show scenes from the 2023 show created around the theme "Voyage," celebrating the cultures, people and heritage of iconic global destinations. The image show here was of the mannequin celebrating Australia, created by Bold Blossoms by KM with all fresh flowers and plant material. Images on the "Concerts by Type of Music" page show scenes from the 2022 show created around the theme "Femmes," with displays depicting culturally, politically and historically significant women from around the world. All images are from the Southern California installations at South Coast Plaza created during the period of the Spring Garden Show.
