METAMORPHOSES

II. THE EYE OF THE STORM (Cycles)
When the picture of what is today
Becomes tomorrow's image of what was
Obscuring what came before
And unable to reveal what lies ahead
We ponder the meaning of what passes
Sitting at the center of change
Like a voyage inside the eye of a slow-moving storm
Where few winds blow
Leaving us blind to what lies outside
Until the walls of the storm dissipate
To reveal the outcome of its path
Marked by what is left of what was
The transformation to what is
Still not complete to what will be
For with no visible chrysalis from which to emerge
Who is to say when that change is complete?
And through the storm how many butterflies emerge
Unwanted or unappreciated
By the unseen hands
Who in seeking to shape and control the destinies they create
Erect barriers like new cocoons
In which to place the butterflies
Until they emerge again in some preferred state
Before the next storm gathers
Around those sitting at the center of change
Like a voyage inside the eye of a slow-moving storm
Where few winds blow
Leaving them blind to what lies outside
Until the walls of the storm dissipate
To reveal the outcome of its path
Marked by what is left of what was
The transformation to what is
Still not complete to what will be
III. ACT YOUR AGE
An unfortunate event on the 405 Freeway last week
culminated in the passing of several ages
Ice Age, while refusing to yield to the Stone Age,
careened into the center divider
and melted tragically as his air conditioner
shut off on the 100-degree day
The Industrial Age's old diesel engine
overheated in the ensuing traffic and was struck by
The Space Age, who was travelling
much too fast for prevailing conditions
The Computer Age and The Information Age
while travelling together
were determined to get around the gridlock
but The Information Age
couldn't remember where the other freeway was
and the Computer Age
couldn't get the GPS system to work
The Nanotechnology Age
simply avoided the problem
by building its own highway
around the mess.
