Each year www.dorothyswebsite.org is pleased to be able to welcome the works of special guest artists to the site. The guest artists are invited to display works which in some way either express or interpret the summer theme, which in 2008 is "METAMORPHOSES". The site welcomes Carl Ramsey of Los Angeles as the 2008 Guest Painter. Images of his paintings are exhibited below, and you can read more about him on the 2008 Website Special Guests page.

Anyone who has visited downtown Los Angeles for a long period of time knows that the downtown of today is a very different place than the downtown of 20 - 25 years ago. Many of the paintings presented this year were part of a 2007 exhibit called "Vanishing L.A.," but they belong to a larger body of work that goes beyond a simple historical record to capture an essence of place and time. Artist Carl Ramsey says the following of his images of the Historic Core District of downtown Los Angeles: The first time I ventured into this section of the city was sometime in the mid sixties while a student at the Chouinard Institute. I was reminded then of an even earlier time, a time when I was very young, in San Diego, not long after World War II. Occasionally my father would have to drive to an area of downtown San Diego strewn with card parlors, pool halls and dive bars to attempt to locate a family friend who habitually strayed into the area. Once or twice I was required to wait inside our locked car, and it was while sitting safely in our '48 Pontiac sedan that I was able to observe an essence of a particular place and time. There was an air of stasis, of arrested time due, I suppose, to the distractions of war. In Los Angeles a decade and a half later I believe I saw the last of that lingering ghost of the post-WWII era. When I went looking for it years later, it was of course gone. In the year 2000 I moved my studio to a loft in downtown L.A. Not long after, I realized something rather important. Simply put, I had looked in the right place for the wrong thing. More succinctly: I had been looking but failing to see. To recapture a long-lost fleeting glimpse or peruse the picturesque became inane; the mundane, the unattractive and the unlovely permeate the city, or so it seems. Certainly before a painting has a decent chance of being interesting something interpretive of a fairly higher order has to go on somewhere between an image observed and the brain. The trick is to train oneself to SEE. With practice a coherent interpretation follows. Then it is left to the individual artist to apply whatever skills are available to the task of producing the painting. The transformation from "base material" to artwork is the true metamorphosis.
