WELCOME TO WWW.DOROTHYSWEBSITE.ORG!
What's coming in February? Another relatively quiet month. Most college/university peformances will be back in full swing by the start of the month. Symphony performances and Lunar New Year events continue, and several programs in February celebrate Black History Month (also referred to in some programs as African American Heritage Month). One short note on information which has been coming in to the site (PLEASE READ): There are usually at least three sources of information for the listings - printed materials physically picked up in the cities listed, e-mail messages and newsletters, and information/updates reviewed on websites. Over the last few months there has been an increasing amount of conflicting concert information - often three different versions of information on a single event, with some information listing incorrect times, names of bands appearing, etc. Although attempts are made to reconcile all conflicting information, sometimes this is not possible. Once again, it is recommended that you phone the venue or check for the most up-to-date information on the venue/organizations' website prior to attending a concert. As always, the music at the events listed is free (though the food vendors, rides and other activities found at most of the festivals and fairs are not). Regular site updates take place on the first and third Thursdays of the month. February updates will be on February 2nd and 16th. Please check back often, and be sure to check the site's Twitter page for last-minute updates and new information (see below). To introduce the site to new visitors and take a look back as the site heads toward its 10th Anniversary summer, the special retrospective on www.dorothyswebsite.org from 2003 to the present will continue this month. The "Concerts By Date" page will provide a bit of history, artwork and information on the site from 2003 - 2007, and the "Concert By City" page will include similar information from 2008 - 2011. PLEASE REMEMBER: Again, although every attempt is made to bring you the most current performance information possible, ALL SCHEDULES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU CONFIRM ANY PERFORMANCE YOU WISH TO ATTEND. A phone number and web link are included if available. You can follow dorothyswebsite on Twitter as well - click the link at the bottom of the page! Following the site on Twitter will give you access to information on other free events, products and services, plus any last-minute updates on concert information. If you don't want to join Twitter, but would like to see the information, you can visit the site's Twitter page at www.twitter.com/dorothyswebsite. Also, if you'd like an event posted, please send an e-mail with the concert information along with a contact name and phone number to news@dorothyswebsite.org. Thanks!

Dorothyswebsite.org began in the summer of 2003 as little more than a computer exercise in the Cypress College Adult Education computer labs. Originally intended to last about a month, the site will enter its tenth summer in 2012. This month a brief retrospective will be presented on the site for both new and returning visitors to show a bit more about how the site has grown and changed since its inception. The picture above shows the initial site heading and some of the main categories within the site. In that first summer, the concert pages listed events in 18 venues in 15 cities. Other sections of the site that first summer included "Poetry and Photos" (six poems from a book of poetry I had written entitled Journeys, Destinations, Routes), a series of writing excerpts from works I had written both professionally and in graduate school, and the first ever www.dorothyswebsite.org essay. The first essay was a lament, shall we say, about the student loan system -- concerning issues which are still valid today. That essay, and all the essays which have appeared on the site over its nine summers, can be viewed by going to www.dorothyswebsite.org/essay_archives.html. These archives have remained posted from the 2011 summer site (for which the theme was "Game Changer") and will continue to be available for viewers to see/read. Please note: you can navigate from essay to essay within the archives, but if you click any of the "home" links, they will take you back to the current winter home page. Also, the poem below is one which appeared on the site during its first summer. (Sydney, Australia photograph © 1985 Dorothy A. And what happened once that first summer ended? For registering the domain name, I received a free one-page web space. Only the concert listings continued on an ongoing basis from the end of September through the beginning of June for several years. It was a "primitive" page in the sense that no pictures were allowed (the "Coming Soon" graphic which appeared on the page was one of only a few possible choices available). There was a choice of only one color for the background and one color for the text, so the site remained with beige-ish/gold-ish text on a black background for most of the year while I decided on what to do the next summer. Click here to view a sample of that page. The sample page is from 2007, but it is how the page appeared in the non-summer months for several years beginning in 2003. Those who know me know I have no background in computer programming/languages, design, or any other field you'd think one might have to create and run a website. So . . . after 2003 I thought I'd continue to teach myself a bit more about creating a site. I learned a bit more about "HTML" and continued using the Front Page software program when I began creating the 2004 summer website. In 2003 I had used a stock theme design from the Front Page program, but I decided to create my own graphics for 2004. Although I set up the structure and navigation for the 2004 site on Front Page, I decided to do as much of the rest of the site as I could on my own. The image above is of the heading from the 2004 summer home page. To return to the concert calendar, click here.

Since the concert page had received a fairly good response the previous year, I added more cities/venues for 2004. In 2004 the listings included 53 venues in 46 cities. In addition to dividing the concert listings by city and date, I also divided them into Orange County, Los Angeles County and Other Cities (which for a while were either cities not regularly covered in the listings or cities outside of LA and Orange Counties). Two new sections were also added in 2004. A "links" page was included for the first time with links to city/venue websites and websites for artists/bands appearing at the concerts. By the end of the summer, 275 artist/band links were included on the page. A new "Featured Artists" section was also added. "Featured Artists" are musicians/bands who appear at a number of concerts in a variety of venues over the course of the summer. One concert series or festival is also included each year. Since 2004 the "Featured Artists" section has named a new artist/band every two weeks during the summer months. The first "Featured Artists" on the site were The Cypress Pops Orchestra, The Fenians (Irish), Doo Wah Riders (Country), Jumpin' Joz (Swing), The Answer (Classic Rock), and The Artists of Grand Performances (including Stew, Quetzal's tribute to Los Lobos, and the Hong Kong City Contemporary Dance Company). In 2004 the essay series also took on the format which has continued since that year. Each summer three to four essays appear, generally on a topic of consumer-related technological issues. Most of the photographs I had used on the site were ones I had been using since 2003. In 2005, I tested out a couple of new photo editing/design programs to see if I could do something a bit different with the pictures I had. On one program I found a setting (now fairly common) for turning pictures into digital "impressionist" paintings, so all the pictures on the site that summer appeared as "impressionist" works. An explanation was posted on a "Before/After" page, part of which is included above. Turning my pictures into "faux" works of art made me think, however -- why not invite artists to exhibit their works on the site as well? As a result, works of guest artists have been included on the site since that summer. In 2005, the guest artists were Guest Painter Debra Huse of Balboa Island, Guest Photographer Dirk Yuricich of Lake Tahoe, and Guest Poet James Ragan of Los Angeles. The works of the Guest Painter and Photographer appeared, and have continued to appear, on the summer "All Cities By City" and "All Cities By Date" concert pages. The works of Guest Poets are included on separate pages within the poetry section. One poem from the 2005 site is included below. To return to the concert calendar, click here. . . . For the "On The Horizon" theme, most of my own photos were made to have a similar look, feel, and color range, such as the one above. Guest artists were ones whose works had strong "horizons" in the paintings and photographs. The 2006 Guest Painter was Astrid Preston, and the Guest Photographer was Dennis Dunton. (There was no Guest Poet in 2006). 2006 also was the last summer that all of my poems included on the site were drawn from the "Journeys, Destinations, Routes" book (which was updated and added to in 2004). A poem which appeared on the site that summer is included below. BEVERLY HILLS - MUSIC AT THE BEVERLY HILLS FARMERS MARKET. One special feature in 2006 was the sites "Midsummer Mystery Photos." Photographs were taken at various locations throughout Southern California (some well known, others a bit off the beaten track), and visitors were asked to guess the location of the site pictured. The picture above is of the Hollywood and Highland Center in Hollywood. At the end of the summer, the simple one-page listing of concerts continued, though problems on the page were beginning to emerge. Each month I was limited to a certain bandwith for the site. If that amount was exceeded, the site shut down until the beginning of the next month when the "counter" zeroed out. It didn't happen often, but it was something to consider as the site headed into it's fifth summer. . . To return to the concert calendar, click here. The year 2007 marked a year of changes for the site. In the site's 5th Anniversary summer, the theme was "Pieces: Whole [The Whole is Greater than the Sum of Its Parts]." Michelangelo's classic statue of David, one of the most familiar figures in the world, was "alive" and well in Southern California and was the subject of the pictures on the home page. The pictures were not clever works of digital deconstruction but actual works of art in Southern California. The "pieces" figure, David/Fallen Monument, sits on a grassy knoll in between the library and the computer science and engineering building on the California State University Fullerton campus (ironically, home of the CSUF Titans). The statue was an identical marble replica of Michelangelo's David which stood at the Forest Lawn cemetery in Cypress for nearly 20 years. It fell and broke during the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake. According to a plaque at the statue's base, Forest Lawn donated the fragments to CSUF for installation as a fallen monument, analogous to the countless fallen monuments that have come down throughout history. It was installed on the campus in 1989. The "whole" or fully intact David was about all that remained accessible at the former Movieland Wax Museum complex in Buena Park. The statue once graced the entryway of a facility adjacent to the museum called the Palace of Living Arts and used to be visible from Beach Boulevard, but it has since been removed. Although the summer site was different each year, at the end of the summer of 2007, the fall/winter/spring site still remained in the same format which it had held since the fall of 2003. (Click here to view that format again.) A steady stream of visitors continued to come to the site in the non-summer months, especially for fall October festivals and holiday events in December. In both of those months that year, the alloted capacity for the site was used up with at least 10 days remaining in the month, so the site was not available for at least a third of the month. Although the months of January, February and March in 2008 were quiet, in April of 2008 the decision was made to upgrade the site to full color/full designability for the entire year. The fall/winter/spring site remained a one-page site for the non-summer months with concerts listed only by date, but all constraints on capacity and design were removed. The picture above was the heading for the site for April and May of 2008. The site's story continues with Summer 2008 on the "Concerts By City" page . . . To return to the concert calendar, click here. To return to the top of the page, click here.
ONE FINAL THOUGHT ON THE CONCERTS: All of the concerts in the listings are free to the general public, and there are some truly outstanding programs. However, many of the groups and organizations sponsoring these concerts incur substantial costs in bringing them to you year after year. Donations which allow them to continue their tradition of bringing quality music to the general public at no charge are appreciated. . . . AND ONE REQUEST FOR VISITORS: Survey forms are sometimes passed out at concerts/event venues, and the question "How did you hear about this event?" is often asked. If you are attending an event you found on this site and receive such a form, it would be much appreciated if you let them know that you found the information on www.dorothyswebsite.org. Thank you!
